The Modeling and Simulation Coordination Office (M&SCO) directly assists and supports the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics (USD(AT&L)) and the Modeling and Simulation Steering Committee (M&S SC) in executing DoD M&S Enterprise responsibilities assigned in DoDD 5000.59. To accomplish this, M&SCO provides support, as shown in the diagram below, in two key areas:
- Governance: enterprise-level coordination among the M&S activities of the DoD Communities and Components to encourage cooperation, synergy, and cost -effectiveness, and
- Operations: which includes sustainment and operation of M&S Core capabilities - tools, data, and services - which support USD(AT&L) and the M&S SC in the management and execution of DoD M&S Enterprise activities.

The M&S Core was established by the M&S SC to ensure that support capabilities receive life-cycle sustainment and M&S SC oversight; in the future many of these capabilities will be deliverables and products from M&S SC investment activities. Currently M&S Core capabilities include:
- Tools, Data, and Services which AT&L, the M&S SC, and M&SCO use to plan, manage, and coordinate enterprise-level investments, requirements, and programs.
- Tools, Data, and Services which support managers, developers, and users of DoD M&S Enterprise capabilities in asset visibility, documentation, and standards.
