The US DoD Modelling and Simulation Coordination Office (M&SCO) leads the US delegation in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Modelling and Simulation Group (NMSG) and its subgroups as Principle Panel National Member. NMSG's mission is,"to promote co-operation among Alliance bodies, NATO Member Nations and PfP [Partnership for Peace] Nations to maximise the effective utilisation of M&S". Its primary mission areas include M&S standardization, education, and associated science and technology. It is one of seven technical panels that were organized by the NATO Research and Technology Organization (RTO), which promotes and conducts co-operative scientific research and exchange of technical information amongst 28 NATO nations and 38 NATO partners. As the US delegation's lead to NMSG, M&SCO coordinates with the DoD M&S Components and Communities for their international M&S interests and priorities, and assists them in their participation.
M&SCO participates as the US delegation's Principle Panel National Member alongside two other Panel National Members and is assigned the US delegation's voting authority. M&SCO's director is also currently serving a two year commitment as NMSG Vice-Chair. NMSG's membership is fully open to all NATO nations, Partnership for Peace nations and Australia. Nations are encouraged to provide both technical M&S experts from M&S national offices, who are generally responsible for M&S policy and development in their nation, and military officers (mainly interested in M&S application to support military activities).
NMSG has three subgroups organized under it: Military Operational Requirements Subgroup (MORS); Modelling and Simulation Standards Sub Group (MS3); and Programmes and Planning Committee (PPC).
More information about NMSG activities and upcoming events can be found on their website.
The NATO Modelling and Simulation Standards Profile (NMSSP) aims to provide guidance to NATO and partner nations, as well as national and NATO organisations who have requirements to effectively use modelling and simulation (M&S) in support of NATO coalition and national requirements. No standard is mandated or endorsed by NATO unless there is a related STANAG.
The NMSSP maintains information on M&S standards and recommended practices relevant to achieving M&S interoperability and re-use of M&S components, e.g. data, models. The NMSSP provides a set of standards descriptions for decision making on options for the use of M&S standards for NATO activities, e.g. coalition training and experimentation.
